Minnesota Boiler License Practice Exam: Prep, Study Guide & Practice Test

The use of crosses instead of ells on water column connections is primarily due to the ease of cleaning that crosses provide. In a system where water columns are utilized to gauge the water level in a boiler, it is essential that these connections remain clear of debris and scaling. Crosses allow for a more direct path for cleaning tools, facilitating access to all ports of the connection without the need for additional disassembly that might be required with ells.

While other factors such as strength, cost, and pressure tolerance are important in piping design, the primary advantage of using crosses in this context relates to maintenance. By ensuring that the connections are easy to access and clean, the overall reliability and efficiency of the water level measurement system can be significantly enhanced, preventing potential operational issues in a boiler system.
